Cleaning and Protection
We are enhancing cleaning procedures throughout the day, disinfecting exam rooms completely after each patient.
Lexan shields have been installed at reception and in the dispensary for both patient and staff protection.
Pre-scheduling is required for Frame Gallery visits, glasses and contact lens deliveries.
Frames will be disinfected after each handling before being returned to the boards.
Scheduling and Appointments
We will have new scheduling to allow for more time and space for each patient.
You will be given the option to wait in your car or outdoors and check in by phone upon arrival. You can choose to receive a call or text when the Doctor is ready to see you.
Only the patient who has the appointment will be allowed into the office and exam room, with a few exceptions.
We are modifying exam procedures and testing equipment to increase safety. Some procedures may be deferred until they are more necessary and others may be recommended.
The Government of Ontario has dramatically underfunded OHIP insured Eye examinations for the last 32 years to where these years of neglect reached a point where barely half of the cost of providing the exam is covered. The Optometrist is left funding the balance themselves. Ontario is currently the worst funded for insured eye exams in all of Canada by more than 70%.
Unfortunately there has been a breakdown in negotiations with the Ministry of Health and the optometrists of Ontario have made the very difficult decision to withdraw from OHIP services as of September 1st 2021. This was done after 6 months of warning and is not taken lightly.
Should you have an ocular emergency please contact our office and we will, guide you and ensure you get the care you need.
We would appreciate your help in trying to save eyecare in Ontario and invite you to please visit the saveeyecare.ca website where you can send a letter to you MPP, the Minister of Health and the Premier. Please let them know how much eye care matters in Ontario and how we need this fixed as soon as possible.
Thank you for your patience and understanding as we fight to save eye care in Ontario.
You will be pre-screened before the exam or entering the office as to whether you have symptoms of COVID-19, have been in close contact with anyone with symptoms of COVID-19, or have traveled outside of Ontario/Canada within the last 14 days.

DR. KAREN SALAJ, O.D.
Dr. Karen Salaj graduated from the University of Waterloo School of Optometry in 1989 with both Honours Science and Doctor of Optometry degrees. In addition she holds a Therapeutic Pharmaceutical Certification from Nova Southeastern University in Florida.
After working in Ottawa and Montreal in private practice (Montreal Association for the Blind low vision clinic and as a clinical supervisor at the University of Montreal's School of Optometry) Dr. Salaj started working in Morrisburg as a part time associate of Dr. Norman Tenenbaum in 1993. The practice, which was started in the late 1950s by Dr. Walroth, was a small satellite practice for Dr. Tenenbaum. Dr. Salaj loved the people, the town and its beautiful surroundings so much that she purchased the practice in September 1996 to become its sole practitioner.
Dr. Salaj has grown the practice significantly since then, moving it twice within the Morrisburg Plaza to accommodate the office's growing needs and incorporate the increasing technological advances in eye care and growing demand for glasses and contacts lenses.
New patients are welcome and Dr. Salaj looks forward to continuing to care for and serve patients for many years to come.
